DC Council Votes 11-2 to Approve Same-Sex Marriage
Earlier today the DC Council voted 11-2 to approve the "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009." This is the first of two votes necessary before the legislation can be sent to Mayor Fenty for his signature. The final vote is expected later this month. Due to DC's unique status as a "district" and not a "state," its legislation is subject to a period of Congressional review. After that review period (during which Congress is not expected to alter the law), same-sex marriages could begin in the District.
